ประวัติ

การทำแผนที่ในประเทศไทยนั้น เริ่มขึ้นอย่างเป็นระบบในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยนายเฮนรี อลาบาสเตอร์ (Henry Alabaster ต้านสกุลเศวตศิลา) ที่ปรึกษาส่วนพระองค์ได้ถวายคำแนะนำให้จัดตั้งกองทำแผนที่ขึ้นและเริ่มทำแผนที่กรุงเทพฯ แผนที่การวางสายโทรเลขจากกรุงเทพฯไปพระตะบอง และแผนที่อ่าวไทย ต่อมาการแผนที่ได้พัฒนาขึ้น จนใน พ.ศ. 2426 ได้มีการจัดตั้งโรงเรียนแผนที่ขึ้นในพระบรมมหาราชวัง และจัดตั้งกรมแผนที่เมื่อวันที่ 3 กันยายน 2428 โดยเจ้ากรมคนแรกคือ พระวิภาคภูวดล (เจมส์ แมคคาธี) ส่วนอาคารกรมแผนที่ทหาร ได้สร้างขึ้นในราว พ.ศ. 2434 เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพระราชวังสราญรมย์ เรียกว่า โรงเรียนทหารสราญรมย์ ต่อมาได้ใช้เป็นกรมเสนาธิการทหารบก จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2474 กรมแผนที่จึงย้ายมาที่อาคารนี้ และได้ดำเนินการต่อมาจนรวมกิจการเข้ากับกรมแผนที่ทหารบกและในพ.ศ. 2506 จึงเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นกรมแผนที่ทหารมาจนปัจจุบัน รูปแบบอาคารเป็นแบบนีโอคลาสสิค เน้นจุดเด่นที่มุขขนาดใหญ่ โดยเฉพาะที่มุขกลาง มีแผงประดับหน้ามุข ประกอบด้วยตราประจำพระองค์พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (พระเกี้ยว) และช้างเอราวัณ

History

Survey works in Thailand has systematically begun since King Rama V’s reign when Mr. Henry Alabaster, the royal private Consultant had advised the king to establish a Survey Division, whose earliest works included the mapping of Bangkok, the telegram line from Bangkok to Battambang, and the Gulf of Thailand. Consequently, the first Survey School was founded in 1883, and 3rd September 1885, saw the establishment of the Survey Department, with Phra Wiphaphuwadon (James McCarthy) as the first Director As for the building, it was built circa 1891 as part of Saranrom Palace. It was a military school and the Chief of Staff Department consecutively before it became the office of the Survey Department in 1931. Later, after having been united with Royal Thai Survey Department. The building is neoclassic style accentuated by massive porches, particularly the middle one, which is decorated with a fractable on which the emblem of King Rama V an Eranwan, the three-headed elephant are embellished
